Austria's official digital government portal occasionally struggles under high traffic, especially around tax deadlines or public holidays. If the page won't open, start with the basics: clear your browser cache, disable any extensions that interfere with cookies, and try a different browser. Chrome and Firefox tend to behave most consistently with the portal's authentication system. If the issue persists across browsers, the problem is likely on the server side — wait 15–30 minutes and retry.
This is one of the more common friction points. The portal uses Handy-Signatur or ID Austria for authentication, and failures often trace back to a mismatch between the phone number registered and the one currently in use, or an expired certificate.
If the one-time code for authentication doesn't show up, it's rarely a portal bug. Network congestion, carrier filtering, or a temporary outage at the SMS gateway are more likely causes. Switch to a Wi-Fi connection, wait a few minutes, and request the code again. If your number was recently ported to another carrier, there may be a propagation delay of up to 24 hours before SMS delivery normalizes.
Submission failures usually happen when a session has timed out mid-fill. The portal's session window is relatively short. If you hit submit and nothing happens, or you see a generic error, your session has likely expired. Copy any text you've entered, reload the page, log back in, and complete the form again in one go. Avoid leaving the form open in a background tab for extended periods.
Some official documents served through the portal require a standalone PDF reader rather than a browser's built-in viewer. If pages appear blank or garbled, download the file and open it with a dedicated application. Also confirm the file fully downloaded — partial downloads produce exactly this kind of rendering failure.
