If Word, Excel, or any other app freezes right after opening, the first thing to check is whether the installation is corrupted. Run the built-in repair tool: go to Control Panel → Programs → Microsoft 365 → Change → Quick Repair. If that doesn't help, try Online Repair — it redownloads core components from Microsoft's servers.
This usually happens after a Windows reinstall or switching to a new device. Sign out of your Microsoft account inside any Office app (File → Account → Sign Out), then sign back in. If the error code is 0x8004FC12 or similar, the license server might not be responding — wait 10–15 minutes and try again. Make sure the account you're signing into actually has an active subscription.
First, check your internet connection — Outlook needs a stable one even for basic IMAP/SMTP operations. If the status bar at the bottom shows 'Disconnected' or 'Trying to connect', go to Send/Receive → Work Offline and toggle it off. Sometimes the outbox gets jammed with a large attachment; delete or move it and try again. If the issue is with a corporate account, the Exchange server might be temporarily unavailable — confirm with your IT team.
Large files with many formulas, embedded objects, or tracked changes are the usual culprits. Disable hardware graphics acceleration: File → Options → Advanced → uncheck 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'. Also turn off add-ins one by one (File → Options → Add-ins) to find which one is slowing things down.
If search returns no results or throws an error, the index is likely broken. Go to File → Options → Search → Indexing Options → Rebuild. The process takes a few minutes depending on mailbox size.
